bride & groom embracing with a big open sky backdrop-black rock resort west coast wedding

alyson & justin’s amazing black rock resort west coast wedding.

destination weddings are fabulous in many ways – they gather together a couple’s closest family & friends, in a location that means a lot to them & everyone’s there for the weekend or longer, so lots of time to connect, enjoy the views, the local offerings & all the love. It was why alyson & justin chose to get married on the west coast, at the gorgeous black rock oceanfront resort. They both love the energy, raw beauty & waves (for riding) that the west coast offers. And so it was an easy choice for them to choose ucluelet as their place to walk into marriage. Although, it looked like there might be a little hitch to those plans when, just before their wedding day, a truck carrying aviation fuel crashed on the only road into ucluelet & tofino. And it closed the road down. Completely. For over 24 hours. As alyson & justin sat at the black rock, sending out travel updates, they looked back on their early plans to skip the whole wedding-thing & simply elope. Keep it small. And very personal. And, when they were suddenly faced with that now being a possibility, they realized how important it was to them to have their clan of love & support there with them as they promised their lives to one another. And as it turned out, (as it so often does), everything unfolded just fine… some of us spent time stopped along the road (giving me a chance to practice my guitar with no one in earshot – all around a good thing), & then, the road opened up, we all flowed into ukee & the celebration began. And what a celebration it was! So much ease, happiness, warm welcoming hearts, big hugs, laughter & love. Oh, so much love. All wrapped up in the stunning beauty of the west coast, with healthy doses of fabulous food, beautiful decor, great music & some awesome dance moves.

alyson & justin, i’m entirely honoured you invited me along to document your wedding day. And incredibly grateful for your warmth & hospitality. For welcoming me amongst your best people as though i was a part of it all. I truly look forward to seeing where the world takes you both, on your journey as mr & mrs. It will be amazing & filled with heaps of love & laughter, this much we know.

overbury resort thetis island wedding-couple kissing with the ocean & big sunset sky behind them

alana & andrew’s overbury resort thetis island wedding.

alana & andrew were married next to the ocean, on beautiful thetis island, surrounded by family & friends, wrapped in so much love, happiness, anticipation & joy. The weather forecasted rain, but the sun shone bright instead. Although, truth be told, these two would have been happy no matter what the weather brought. It was the same with their engagement session (take a look at all that love here) crazy weather day & then, not, just a whole lot of grace & love. alana & andrew have an ease that’s infectious & simply a joy to be around. And they couldn’t have found a more perfect venue than overbury resort for their walk into marriage. A stunning combination of of easy-going rustic elegance, not unlike alana & andrew themselves. These two are grounded in love & great humour, & there was so much laughter & heart-opening tender moments throughout their wedding day.

alana & andrew, thank you. Thank you for having me along, for sharing your wedding day so warmly, so openly with me. For all the fun, beauty & love swirling within & around you. Thank you, for being you, with all of us.

hornby island summer beach photo session

hornby island summer beach photo session with charo, craig & baby lucien

it’s summer! Life’s full & busy – flowing over with work, time off with family, beachy afternoons, friends, sunshine & a whole lot of sweetness. Sometimes i’m super fortunate when a bunch of those wonderful things about summer fall all together into one place & time. Like a short & sweet session with dear friends charo & craig & their new wonder mr. lucien at the beach right in front of your little cabin, surrounded by other friends, warm ocean water, afternoon sunshine & so much love. I spent some time with charo & craig last summer, when lucien was still tucked happily inside (you can see some moments from that session here). Time shifts once baby arrives, so we created a mini meet-up at the beach to capture some of their first summer as a trio. So.Much.Fun!

big hugs & heaps of love to you three! It’s a joy & delight to get to capture a little of the sweet spark of love you all share. Here’s to all the summers still to come! xo

intimate bodega ridge wedding - galiano island - couple hugging in front of sparkling ocean

intimate bodega ridge wedding – galiano island

late summer, sun sparkling off clear ocean water, an intimate gathering of family & friends, all-things-fabulous at bodega ridge, katrina & corey starting a new life together, heading off into new sunsets, a new home in a different country, a chance to gather together with their nearest & dearest to celebrate all that has been & all that is yet to come, wrapped in the beauty of the natural world, before heading off with rings on their fingers, a new shared last name (an amalgamation of a little of each of theirs), & hearts filled with love & wonder.

everything about katrina & corey’s walk into marriage was gentle & easy, heartfelt & true. It was an honour to be amongst their family & friends to witness & celebrate the beginning of their new lives as mr & mrs. Heaps of love & happiness to you both. xo

female singer songwriter - on stage - hornby island

kim june johnson – in concert – hornby island

there are a lot of perks to living on hornby. A lot. And one of the many is the number of incredibly talented musicians who either live & work here or travel here to give concerts. It’s not unusual (nor an exaggeration) to be in our small, community-built community hall listening to world class musicians. Some come as part of the fantastic hornby festival, some come for the hornby island blues festival, some through the celtic festival, others through personal connections. Year round there are concerts at the hall, joe king park & intimate house concerts at a few homes around the island. And kim june johnson firmly holds her own alongside all that talent. She was awarded Vocalist of the Year at the 2015 Vancouver Island Music Awards & her gorgeous album ‘Canvas and Clay’ was nominated for Album of the Year. Her live shows beautifully combine song, storytelling and poetry.

on this particular evening, she was backed-up by the uber talented marc atkinson – one of Canada’s finest JUNO-nominated, award-winning musicians – & scott white – a multi faceted bassist & music therapist splitting his time & talent between berlin, germany & the west coast of bc. My only wish is that there was a sound track to this post. We were spell bound by their collective talent & creative collaboration. For the soundtrack, you’ll have to check out their respective websites. And for now, enjoy a visual journey through the soundscape…
