female singer songwriter - on stage - hornby island

kim june johnson – in concert – hornby island

there are a lot of perks to living on hornby. A lot. And one of the many is the number of incredibly talented musicians who either live & work here or travel here to give concerts. It’s not unusual (nor an exaggeration) to be in our small, community-built community hall listening to world class musicians. Some come as part of the fantastic hornby festival, some come for the hornby island blues festival, some through the celtic festival, others through personal connections. Year round there are concerts at the hall, joe king park & intimate house concerts at a few homes around the island. And kim june johnson firmly holds her own alongside all that talent. She was awarded Vocalist of the Year at the 2015 Vancouver Island Music Awards & her gorgeous album ‘Canvas and Clay’ was nominated for Album of the Year. Her live shows beautifully combine song, storytelling and poetry.

on this particular evening, she was backed-up by the uber talented marc atkinson – one of Canada’s finest JUNO-nominated, award-winning musicians – & scott white – a multi faceted bassist & music therapist splitting his time & talent between berlin, germany & the west coast of bc. My only wish is that there was a sound track to this post. We were spell bound by their collective talent & creative collaboration. For the soundtrack, you’ll have to check out their respective websites. And for now, enjoy a visual journey through the soundscape…

trudy & daniel’s extended family were gathering at their comox home to celebrate the arrival of their sweet little. They came from montreal & london, england to welcome the next generation. And they welcomed me into their home with warm smiles & open hearts. We spent time together there, in their lovely home, documenting their easy moments hanging out together & simply enjoying each other’s fabulous company. Their little guy is so well loved & their sweet, deep connections were a joy to be around. And then we headed out to goose spit for some photos on the beach. And although dark clouds were looming, the rain stayed away & we played for a bit in the cool spring breeze. More laughter. And more love throughout.

trudy & family… thank you all for your kindness, for sharing your afternoon so openly with me. Your love for one another is wonderfully tangible & it comes through in the photographs. Much happiness to you all! xo

vancouver island bc engagement – a session with alana & andrew at the oh-so-lovely neck point park in nanaimo.

i first met alana & andrew on a hot summer’s day in tsawassen to chat about all-things-wedding-&-photo. A bird pooped on me during our meeting on an outdoor patio. And alana, not fazed at all, took my napkin & cleaned up the offering on the back of my shirt. Having a client who’s a nurse can be a real bonus. I took the pooping as a sign of good things to come (silver lining & all that). And it was! Collaborating with these two was as sweet & easy as it gets. The day called for rain. But they took the ferry over to nanaimo, got changed in my westy, snuggled under an umbrella with big smiles for all of 5 minutes. And then the rain stopped. The umbrellas got put away & the smiles remained. We wandered around & through neck point park (SO beautiful) – they climbed cliffs & rocky outcroppings, snuggled in amongst the daffodils, laughed & kissed & laughed some more. So much love. And fun. And it all makes me that much more excited for their wedding, coming in june. Here’s a little wander through our afternoon together…

documentary newborn family session on hornby island

over the years, jody has done an amazing job taking care of so many of our hornby kids at preschool. And nick does a fabulous job as a master groundsman taking care of our trees & yards. And now, they get to channel all that love into caring for their own dear babe. Little nora’s arrival into the world was as sweet as she is. And she’s being held in such grateful tenderness for all she is bringing into this little family & into our community. This session started out at a gift, bought by friends, to celebrate jody & nick’s engagement. And then it shifted into a maternity session. And then, it finally felt right to have me come & capture this first week of their life as a trio. Their lives forever changed & the wonder held in all of that.

jody & nick, thank you for having me, for welcoming me into your sweet home & giving us a glimpse into your joy & happiness. Heartfelt congratulations to you all on this amazing new journey. I’m honoured to know i’ll get to follow you all along.
